The Hawk can fly! (tail view)

bird picture

A huge red-tailed hawk regularly perches on top of the billboard outside my window at work. I've gotten plenty of pictures of it by now. Sometimes it will visit every day for a month or more, other times we won't see it for a few weeks, but always it comes back eventually. Once or twice, I've seen two of them together, so they must be a mating pair. I've also seen them on top of the tower at Mt Auburn Cemetery, where the groundskeeper said they're building a nest. I'm assuming it's the same pair of birds there, a couple of miles away from where I usually see them, and that their territory must cover this entire area. Today, however, was the first time in a while that I've managed to get pictures of it flying. They aren't great, but it's a start -- the last time I got pictures of it flying was well over a year ago now. They're definitely better pictures, too, worth a look.

Last Day in the Nest

bird picture

Well, my wife and I are empty nesters again. The family of doves that squatted in one of our hanging planter baskets have moved on. It was astonishing to us to see how fast the young doves (more properly called "squabs") grew and developed. Two days ago we noticed them standing up and flapping their wings, and last night they flew off. The two earlier pictures I posted of them are www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/4663643008/ and www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/4690398405/

Ornamented Quilt

bird picture

I walked past this on my way to the elevator in a campus building. I tried to take several pictures of this quilt, but they were all pretty awful. The way it is framed, and with the lighting, there was no way to avoid massive amounts of distortion from the lighting.

Telegrafista escamado [Scaled Piculet] (Picumnus squamulatus rohli) (♀)

bird picture

Place: La Pomarrosa Farm, Barlovento, north-central Venezuela. Common species that probably nests at the farm. Obviously, the small insects clinging at its right were in an inminent danger. (P.S.: This was the first time that a picture of a female of this species was posted in Flickr).

Bird Watching? No.. He's watching me!

bird picture

I know this is a very old picture but I've seen a lot of Cat-related photography on Flickr lately and could help but to remember an old best friend of mine. He was unnamed. I just would make a sound and he'd come running. I remember how he would totally ignore everyone else in my household and only stay in my room when I was home. He'd wait to see my headlights through the window and then run to the front door to greet me everyday :)! I've got so many memories with this cat, that I can't bare to get another pet to call "mine". sigh.... I miss him very much so....

Day 081/365 - Ducks versus Man

bird picture

It didnt happen in this picture, but I was feeding the ducks this afternoon with a really huge, really stale loaf of french bread. As I was walking along, a couple of Not-Duck birds noticed that I had bread and started begging. After a few moments of this, the Ducks figured out that the dinner bell had been run and came swooping in for their share of my loaf. And so it went, ducks and Not-Ducks battling it out for bread, when I hear *HONK* *HONK* *HONK* as these MASSIVE geese came in for a landing. The other assorted water foul scattered out of the way as two B-52 sized monsters landed and stormed -right- up to me, as if to announce "You will feed me now!"

The male has a blue top and redish breast. Wait, wrong picture...oh well, I guess it still applies to a Southwest Boeing 737, which I believe that's what my contact Rick said this was. Thanks for the I.D. I appreciate your having a look! This one looks best at large size. The original--- computer-crashing original--- size might be a bit too much. Haha.

Late last year I was approached by the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station in Miami, Florida, as they wanted to use one of my images in a fundraiser calendar they were producing for 2012. Honored to be asked, I agreed, and thought nothing more of it. Imagine the smile on my face when I got home from work today to find an envelope on my desk with 5 of the calendars in it as a thank you. Check them out at pelicanharbor.org/, and see details of the calendar at pelicanharbor.org/products/phss-calendar/. They used my image for February! :-) ... and if you like what you see and want to support their work, they'd welcome donations or calendar purchases (the other pictures in the calendar are fantastic too :-) ). © John Krzesinski, 2012. Did you know you can find me on Facebook? Check me out here.

In Abergorlech there is a picnic area that leads to the Brechfa Forest Gardens. At the entrance is this huge carving that absolutely stunned me with the workmanship and talent involved. I took many pictures because there are so many things carved into this that no matter how many times I walked round it - I still found more. This person is such an artist. These adorable stuffed bird pillows are handmade by Janae Easton of Platypusfile, and named after opera singers. Each bird is totally is unique, no two are the same. Birdwatching

A combination of the weather and a general lack of motivation has kept me from taking many pictures lately - so this is one of those 'obligatory cat pictures' otherwise known as 'filler' until I can get out and about and actually get something done. They're calling for a high of 20 today and 10 tomorrow though, so don't hold your breath.

From my archives: I shot this while sitting alone on a Bay Area dock, surrounded by the murmurs of arriving shorebirds, one group after the other, unfazed by me and my tripod. Mixed flock of Willets, Marbled Godwits, and at least one Lesser Yellowlegs (not pictured in section of the flock).
