The Hawk can fly! (tail view)

bird picture

A huge red-tailed hawk regularly perches on top of the billboard outside my window at work. I've gotten plenty of pictures of it by now. Sometimes it will visit every day for a month or more, other times we won't see it for a few weeks, but always it comes back eventually. Once or twice, I've seen two of them together, so they must be a mating pair. I've also seen them on top of the tower at Mt Auburn Cemetery, where the groundskeeper said they're building a nest. I'm assuming it's the same pair of birds there, a couple of miles away from where I usually see them, and that their territory must cover this entire area. Today, however, was the first time in a while that I've managed to get pictures of it flying. They aren't great, but it's a start -- the last time I got pictures of it flying was well over a year ago now. They're definitely better pictures, too, worth a look.

Best viewed large (and look closely at the right leg). Blow-ups of the ring here. Stone Bay, May 2012. See where this picture was taken. [?] * * * Update: This bird was subsequently identified as Y114264, a first-year female, ringed at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire on 23 November 2011.
