Espiguero bengalí [Lesson's Seedeater] (Sporophila bouvronides) (♀)

bird picture

Lugar: Finca La Pomarrosa. Place: Finca La Pomarrosa. This species is a migrant very common in Barlovento that suddendly appears in May and stay up to November-December. It is very difficult to differentiate Sporophila females in field; the best way is by finding males and females feeding together, like was the case when this picture was taken. (P.S.: This is the first picture of a female of this species posted in Flickr).

that was unexpected. I sat down to rest and this guy started walking up and down a fallen log and then whistled and flew away. I've no damnedest idea why these images turned out as JPG (the ones right before and after these are RAW all right). Also saw a black kite chasing a heron and discovered a mesotrophic bog with large Sphagnum pads (among other interesting Bryophyta goodies) - all within a 15 minute bike ride from my home :) i'm geotagging the picture to the center of Akademgorodok - just in case.

Willie Wagtail.....the pair of nesting Rhipidura leucophrys outside one of my bedroom windows have a birth announcement today. All is well. Rick took this shot super quick while the parents were gone shopping. (no, he didn't touch the nest or branch). Its all very exciting to be able to watch them from the window. Breeding season: mainly August to February; can nest all year round Clutch size: 3 Incubation: 14 days Time in nest: 14 days Its hard to believe that in 14 days they will be flying about. Must take a picture from the window everyday. This is what they sound like : www.birdsinbackyards.net/images/audio/rhipidura-leucophry...

Survival of the bravest

bird picture

Coming back from the island of Elba, on the ferry to Piombino, a man with a bag full of bread was feeding the seagulls that were following the boat. But he didn't just threw the bread at them like anyone else would have, no; he held his arm overboard and waited for the seagulls to come and get the bread. Or rather, the seagull, for only the one in the picture was brave enough to come close enough to claim the prize for himself! That was a real treat! First it positioned itself at the right spot, 10 meters behind and just a little above its prey and then it exploited its higher position to slowly come down and gain 20cm/s of speed over the boat so that it could approach the bread precisely. It looked like an F15 targeting the pipe for in-flight refueling. After snatching the bread, it would quickly fall back using the wind, just to do it all over again.

Dead Pelican In A Tree

bird picture

Another shot. Something you don't see every day - a pelican in a tree. Regrettably he is dead. I think that this pelican must have been blown into the tree; we had some windy days recently and pelicans are big, clumsy fliers. It appears to have been a young pelican. The pelican is the symbolic bird of Klamath Falls; so what does a dead pelican signify?. This photo was taken at the Link River Trail trailhead, the end near Moore Park. I am tempted to go back today with a branch trimmer to get a decent shot - there was no good angle because of the all the branches. Update: I did go back and trim the thick willow branches and replaced these two shots. Sorry for posting a grotesque picture; but I think it is poignant.

This Robin visits our garden several times a day and normally I work every day in the morning. Due to my illness I'm able to make pictures in the morning and to enjoy the sun at that side of my house. Today I took advantage of that because this Robin has never been so close to my house with such nice light! The chains you see in here are from a hanging basket in which the Robin is looking for seeds.

Happy Mother's Day

bird picture

We have a bush in our backyard that has a Cardinal's nest in it. I went outside this morning to find that the babies had hatched, right on Mother's Day :) I thought it was the sweetest thing and it completely brightened my day. They were so hard to get a picture of, so this was the best one I got. It is a really dense bush and they are right at the top in the middle, but inside. So I walked around and stood on a stool until I could get this shot :) It was cute because I randomly started whistling Break Out! Break Out! by All Time Low, and when I did two of the babies perked up and opened their mouths. I guess they thought I was their mom chirping :) Anyway, happy mother's day to any moms out there :)

Cuculus canorus - Common Cuckoo - обыкновенная кукушка view large, please - it's an uncropped picture. I went for a bicycle ride in the forest south of Akademgorodok and heard a cuckoo. I stopped to look for it and noticed another one sitting in no more than 10 m from me, staring at me. I then saw the one I'd heard at first, perched on a willow nearby, and yet another one further to my right. I sat down on the road with my camera, and one of the cuckoos landed very close to me, then flew around me, then sat on a tall birch stump; I watched it feed - every now and then it would jump down to the ground or fly to the trunks of birches nearby to catch bugs and worms, but stayed very close to me. The sun was setting, but I was still able to take several pictures. I'm starting to get a feeling that cuckoos like me for some reason - they're said to be secretive and elusive birds and I've been seeing them a lot lately!

Wryneck - for the record

bird picture

Jynx torquilla - Wryneck - вертишейка It was totally unexpected - I was watching a flycatcher frolic in the branches of a large pine when this little gray bird came to watch it, too. The place where that happened is pretty busy, there's a bus stop and a busy road nearby, a lot of passers-by, not your usual quiet birdwatching nook. I took several shots from a rather long distance, and the bird took off. When I'd looked at the pictures I realized that I'd seen a really interesting creature - the Wryneck. A blurry addition to my woodpecker collection :) I guess I'll have to hang around that place some more.

Welcome Swallow

This welcome swallow, Hirundo Neoxena lives in the aircraft hangar at Aiyura. It is welcome to swallow all of the mosquitoes, flies, and other flying bugs it likes. The welcome swallow looks kind of like a barn swallow, except without the black band on the neck and with slightly shorter tail streamers. I tried to get a picture of this very fast flier in flight, but it came out blurry. Another bird of this kind flew ahead of my truck, yesterday, at about 40 kph before speeding away. Any bird that eats mosquitoes is a friend of mine.

Crows, rooks, and carrion crows browsing in a wheat field between Akademgorodok and Iskitim. "Oh @#$ %!! How do I get out of here?!"

bird picture

Image by Images by John 'K'
I've been in and out of the screen door during the day as I work on stuff in my yard... Well at some stage this little devil slipped in through the screen door while it was open. I have no idea when it did so, but I spotted it as it was flitting around our skylights trying to get out (as you can see they have screens on them so there's no way out up there). Try as I might, I couldn't coax the little fellow to fly down and out of the door it came in through on its own, and it was getting more and more exhausted trying to get out through the screened skylight. In the end I had up go up on our balcony (yes we have an indoor balcony) below the skylight, and climb up on a chair so I could reach the poor little thing as it sat in the corner of the skylight, totally exhausted. It was so worn out by this stage, it just sat there as I carefully put my hands around it, and I then proceeded to carry it outside and put it on its favorite feeder, where it drank long and hard before f lying off. They may be pretty to look at but they are bloody stupid :) This was taken fairly early on in the encounter as I was working out whether I'd be able to convince it to make its own way back out... later on it was a 2-handed operation and I'm the only one at home right now, so no pictures of me holding the little thing I'm afraid. I could have stopped and grabbed a camera and shot myself holding the little bird but the poor thing was traumatized enough without me taking further advantage of the situation. :( I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more.... and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :) © All rights reserved.
