Master of disguise, The Stealth or Ninja Bird? Both Probably! Bittern (4 of)
Image by Lisa Lawley-Dipping toe in water..
Looking at this picture, it's hard to imagine that these birds are so hard to spot. They aren't small, but believe me when I say, these birds can be under your nose and you wouldn't know it. As what happened at first today. This Bittern was no more than 8ft away at first, and was only noticed as it moved slowly into the deeper reeds. It was still luck more than judgement that we spotted it. These have to be my favourite bird now. Their disguise amongst the reeds is impressive. They are stealth preditors in the extreme. They have the ability to move without disturbing the water or reeds, and they just seem to vanish. They stand motionless with their bills under water, waiting to strike, and even when they do, they do it in such a way, that they don't give anything away to watching eyes, unless you are lucky enough to spot it on the move. I watched this Bittern on and off for around two hours. It wasn't phased in the slightest. Probably comfortable in it's own camouflage. It was playing Houdini very effectively, and was extremely hard to detect. There was a lovely chap sharing the experience with us. An avid and pro bird watcher. He pointed out that the Bitterns reflection in water doesn't give anything away either. I have to agree. It was an amazing experience. One I won't forget. :)
