Yo-yo's Great Escape

bird picture

Yo-yo has been part of our family for about nine months, but dislikes being touched and will not perch on my extended finger, or anyone else's, for that matter. He seems otherwise content, but this little idiosyncracy of his has made it impossible for us to allow him out of his cage, at least not the way we do with Spoots. Lately, when I am in our living room for any extended period of time and thus able to keep an eye on all of our birds, I've opened the door of Yo-yo's cage and left it open, hoping he will climb out and do a little exploring, but he has never taken the bait. As long as anyone is around, he simply will not do it. Today was Saturday, and I left shortly before 9:00 in the morning to spend a couple of hours at the library, after first feeding the birds. When I came home later, I was horrified to find Yo-yo's cage empty; I had forgotten to close it before leaving some three hours earlier. Vanessa was up, but had spent the entire morning in another part of the house, which was fortunate. Yo-yo's wings are clipped, so my biggest fear was that someone would accidentally step on him, since we are not accustomed to the cockatiels being outside their cages without human supervision and don't usually expect to find them on the floor. This story did have a happy ending. It took us less than a minute to locate Yo-yo, who was wandering around contentedly under our dining table. I don't know how long he had been out, but he must have left his cage shortly after I left for the library. If that's the case, he spent about three hours waddling around just like this. I got my camera and took some pictures, but after that, getting him back into the cage proved to be a bit of a problem. I was under some time constraints because Vanessa and I had to leave to go to a movie -- "Freedom Writers," starring Hillary Swank, which I highly recommend -- and I didn't want to leave Yo-yo free to wander about while we were gone. He had given me a big enough scare already. I tried coaxing him into stepping on my finger, but to no avail. Since I know from experience that he can bite really hard, I ended up grabbing him as gently as I could, using a towel. He howled and screeched in protest, but within moments he was back in his cage, safe and sound, while I still had ten unwounded fingers.

Birdy

Davide and I took a wander through Sultanahmet, in the very heart of old Istanbul. Some of the typical houses are still in a state of ruin, unfortunately. This one had no roof. The bird decided to jump in the picture just as I decided to take the snapshot...

This is an older picture that I forgot to upload before, I took it in the Masala hall of the Zoo of Zürich. This is a Hamerkop, they also live in Madagaskar. Thanks Tomjikistan and mpgoodey for the ID. I like how he/she is grooming, it makes a kind of wave...

The Stork

Came across this while flipping through a few slightly old pictures. I like how the Stork has manipulated the picture here. Of course I was focusing on the bird, and I had to use the digicam instead of the SLR since the stork was so far away

Best viewed E-X-T-R-A L-A-R-G-E. Here it is, my 400th upload to Flickr, and the largest one yet. I don't know why this kestrel let me get so close - but I'm so glad it did. Foreness, January 2009. See where this picture was taken. [?]
