Nice Bird Picture photos

Orton in nature

I never thought of using the Orton effect on a wildlife picture until I processed this one. It took a fairly boring shot of a bird's backside and turned it into something dreamy.

Yo-yo's Great Escape

bird picture

Yo-yo has been part of our family for about nine months, but dislikes being touched and will not perch on my extended finger, or anyone else's, for that matter. He seems otherwise content, but this little idiosyncracy of his has made it impossible for us to allow him out of his cage, at least not the way we do with Spoots. Lately, when I am in our living room for any extended period of time and thus able to keep an eye on all of our birds, I've opened the door of Yo-yo's cage and left it open, hoping he will climb out and do a little exploring, but he has never taken the bait. As long as anyone is around, he simply will not do it. Today was Saturday, and I left shortly before 9:00 in the morning to spend a couple of hours at the library, after first feeding the birds. When I came home later, I was horrified to find Yo-yo's cage empty; I had forgotten to close it before leaving some three hours earlier. Vanessa was up, but had spent the entire morning in another part of the house, which was fortunate. Yo-yo's wings are clipped, so my biggest fear was that someone would accidentally step on him, since we are not accustomed to the cockatiels being outside their cages without human supervision, or being on the floor at all. This story did have a happy ending. It took us less than a minute to locate Yo-yo, who was wandering around contentedly under our dining table. I don't know how long he had been out, but he must have left his cage shortly after I left for the library. If that's the case, he spent about three hours waddling about just like this. I got my camera and took some pictures, but after that, getting him back into the cage proved to be a bit of a problem. I was under some time constraints because Vanessa and I had to leave to go to a movie -- "Freedom Writers," starring Hillary Swank, which I highly recommend -- and I didn't want to leave Yo-yo free to wander around while we were gone. He had given me a big enough scare already. I tried coaxing him into stepping on my finger, but to no avail. Since I know from experience that he can bite really hard, I ended up grabbing him as gently as I could, using a towel. He howled and screeched in protest, but within moments he was back in his cage, safe and sound, while I still had ten unwounded fingers. I intentionally let Spoots out of his cage when I arrived home, before I realized his companion was missing. But as soon as Spoots saw Yo-yo, he fluttered down to the floor and waddled over to that table to join him. I caught this picture of the two of them together. (Spoots is the 'tiel on the right.)

European Starlings in Flight!

Taken at Marymoor Park a week ago near the mansion. It was fun shooting these pictures. They always took off in a swarm every couple of minutes. Editing this one was a bitch, 'cuase there are so many birds in this photo.

With more than 241,000 seagull pictures on flickr, I thought what flickr really needs is another seagull photograph.
