Follow me on Twitter | Like on Facebook | Check out my blog I don't take many photos of birds but herons are pretty impressive. This one is along the shore of Kitsilano in Vancouver. This is the closest I have even gotten with my camera without them flying away. Check out the location and better quality version of this photography on my blog at www.photo-blog.ca/heron-guarding-vancouver/

This picture isn't that great but I found it pretty cool from the composition and the vegetation...

Waxwing tree

the weather isn't very inviting today so I'm working at home, taking pictures from my window during coffee breaks. The waxwings weren't the most important trophy today, though.

Eurasian Oystercatcher

bird picture

The oystercatcher can be found year round in all British coastal areas, and further inland during the summer months. There are about 40,000 breeding UK pairs with approximately 350,000 birds overwintering from other parts of Europe. They nest on the ground, piling up shingle and small stones to make a nest large enough for 2 - 4 eggs. Coastal birds feed on small molluscs whilst inland birds feed happily on worms. Despite their name they do not have a strong enough beak to open oysters! There are more pictures to follow - unfortunately I cannot tell the male and female apart, so I will assume the bird on the nest is the female and the one doing nothing at the moment is the male! Oyster catchers are listed as an Amber endangered species by the RSPB in the UK

Egret landing

bird picture

Shot late in the day, this egret was sunlit from behind as I caught him landing on this old dock. The feathers on these large birds (wingspan of about 4 feet) are so white, it is hard to catch enough contrast to highlight the detail. The backlighting helped pop the feathers a lot. Shot with a Nikon D300 with Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR zoom at 200mm. Hand held from a boat about 75 feet away. F22, 1/200 sec, ISO 400 The boat, by the way, ran aground moments after snapping this picture, and we found ourselves stuck in deep mud! The things that don't get on camera ...
