In het Zuiderpark zit al jaren een groot aantal van deze parkieten. Na ontelbare pogingen is het eindelijk gelukt om er een behoorlijk op de foto te krijgen. Dankzij de bloesem! In the park near my house lives a large population of these parakeets. After numerous attempts I finally got a decent picture of one. Thanks to the blossom!

Ducklings and Mom on Sluice Pond

Lynn, Massachusetts. I was standing waist deep in water, about to go for a swim in the pond behind my house, when these two tiny ducklings and their watchful mom approached me within an arms length. Obviously, since I was about to go for a swim, I didn't have my camera. They eventually swam off, and I took my swim. As I was getting out of the water, I noticed them heading back in my direction. I grabbed my camera and got back in the water. Once again, they came within three feet of me and graciously posed for pictures.

Walking grebe

When I first saw it from a distance, I thought it was a egret. It actually came ashore three different times while I was there. I took a few shots the first time but it got spooked and went back in the water. I couldn't believe my luck when it came ashore again, but it was still pretty far away. I scared it away trying to move closer, so I decided to sit tight and see if lightning would strike again. This and the previous picture come from its third landing, when it actually came within about twenty feet!

poor guy was trying to look so dignified. don't know what that white fuzz on his beak is or how he got it there. this is a king vulture at the national zoo in washington, dc. no worries, i live nearby and will check on him in a few days to see how he's doing... update: ok., i checked back on him - he's fine and looking pretty suave again... additional update: afer a couple months of looking at this picture i realized it was probably one of his own feathers stuck to his beak. can't believe this didn't occur to me until recently...

This inquisitive fella kept swimming up to me as I walked along the path round Delapre Lake. Obviously expecting some bread to be thrown in, but just hung around until I took his picture then left.

Molting Heron

Denton, TX - Nature isn't always pretty. I saw a couple of Great Blue Herons out at North Lake Park and both of them were looking a little rough. This guy actually let me get pretty close and take quite a few pictures.

Sooty Tern Chick - Lord Howe Island, Australia

Sooty terns lay their eggs directly in depressions on the branches of trees. This is probably a Norfolk pine. Helen took this. See where this picture was taken. [?]

American White Pelican

This huge bird did a flyover and I got several good pictures. The red tag is evidently from Idaho, where they're tagging their two breeding populations.
