Welcome Swallow

bird picture

This welcome swallow, Hirundo Neoxena lives in the aircraft hangar at Aiyura. It is welcome to swallow all of the mosquitoes, flies, and other flying bugs it likes. The welcome swallow looks kind of like a barn swallow, except without the black band on the neck and with slightly shorter tail streamers. I tried to get a picture of this very fast flier in flight, but it came out blurry. Another bird of this kind flew ahead of my truck, yesterday, at about 40 kph before speeding away. Any bird that eats mosquitoes is a friend of mine.

I found that rarest of things today - a woodpecker which didn't mind having a camera pointed at it. View large. Canterbury, September 2012. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Il gabbiano Poldo

So,. usually seagulls fly away. This was too fat perhaps, or too sleepy. I took many close pictures of him. The name fits. Di solito i gabbiani scappano. questo o era troppo grasso o troppo addormentato. O troppo pigro. Il nome ci sta bene.

Jackdaw

Not the most interesting shot, I know, but Jackdaws always turn their back on me as soon as I raise my camera. Lydden Temple Ewell Nature Reserve, May 2010. View large. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Corvids

Crows, rooks, and carrion crows browsing in a wheat field between Akademgorodok and Iskitim. I thought I should take some broad-view pictures too showing the birds in their natural environment - close-ups are great but sometimes they require so much stalking and cause so much of the my-lens-is-too-short frustration that it takes the very fun out of watching the birds.

"Oh @#$ %!! How do I get out of here?!"

I've been in and out of the screen door during the day as I work on stuff in my yard... Well at some stage this little devil slipped in through the screen door while it was open. I have no idea when it did so, but I spotted it as it was flitting around our skylights trying to get out (as you can see they have screens on them so there's no way out up there). Try as I might, I couldn't coax the little fellow to fly down and out of the door it came in through on its own, and it was getting more and more exhausted trying to get out through the screened skylight. In the end I had up go up on our balcony (yes we have an indoor balcony) below the skylight, and climb up on a chair so I could reach the poor little thing as it sat in the corner of the skylight, totally exhausted. It was so worn out by this stage, it just sat there as I carefully put my hands around it, and I then proceeded to carry it outside and put it on its favorite feeder, where it drank long and hard before f lying off. They may be pretty to look at but they are bloody stupid :) This was taken fairly early on in the encounter as I was working out whether I'd be able to convince it to make its own way back out... later on it was a 2-handed operation and I'm the only one at home right now, so no pictures of me holding the little thing I'm afraid. I could have stopped and grabbed a camera and shot myself holding the little bird but the poor thing was traumatized enough without me taking further advantage of the situation. :( I typically upload in small sets - don't just look at the latest one in my photostream as you might be missing something you'll like more.... and your comments are ALWAYS welcome :) © All rights reserved.
